The History of Manheim Township, PA

Manheim Township was one of the original Townships of Lancaster County. Its boundaries were agreed upon in a meeting of magistrates and citizens in a June 9, 1729 meeting. In 1952 the township residents voted to make Manheim Township a first class township. This meant that the township government would follow the first class designation rules laid out by the Pennsylvania’s Municipalities Planning Code.

In 1917, the Rowe Motor Manufacturing Company built a plant in the township to manufacture trucks. There was hope that along with other automotive businesses, Lancaster would become the Detroit of the East; however, in 1925 Rowe Manufacturing had to close its doors.

In the early 1900s Lancaster County boasted one of the premier hotels of its time, the Rossmere. Converted from a private residence, the Rossmere Hotel had 40 guestrooms, a ballroom, restaurant, billiards room, and the first bowling alley in the county. It was later converted to the Rossmere Sanitarium and eventually was torn down to make way for a community services center on Janet Avenue.
One of the more recent industries in Manheim Township was RCA; however, it is no longer in operation. It was a very large employer during its tenure.

The proximity to Lancaster City, as well as its fertile and level land has attracted a large population. These features make the land very valuable and desirable to families, as well as farmers. The result has been the creation of an affluent suburb. The township has a total area of 24.3 square miles. In a 2000 census there were 33,697 people. The township is in Central Lancaster County, bordering the city limits of Lancaster, Pennsylvania to the north.
