Manheim, PA History

Manheim was founded in 1762 by Henry William Stiegel. He was a German Palatine, originally from Cologne, Germany. In 1752, he was employed at the Elizabeth Furnace in northeastern Lancaster County, and by 1756 he had purchased it, along with his former employers, Charles and Alexander Steadman. The Steadmans bought several tracts of land in Rapho Township, and Stiegel bought one third of the land. Along with the Steadmans, he laid out a town and named it Manheim.

In 1764, Stiegel erected a plant in Manheim for the manufacture of blown glass. At its height, the plant employed over 100 men. He had become as successful in glassmaking as he was in the iron industry. Stiegel became sole owner of the town through a series of involved financial transactions. He lived a colorful and lavish lifestyle and was dubbed by those who knew him as “Baron”.

A religious man, Stiegel gave a plot of land to his fellow Lutherans in 1772, to build a church. The cost was five shillings and a rent of one red rose to be paid in the month of June every year thereafter. Although this stipulation had been forgotten for over 120 years, a Festival of the Red Rose was developed in 1892 by the Zion Lutheran Church. Annually, on the second Sunday in June, one red rose is presented as payment to a descendant of the Henry William Stiegel family.

By 1774, Stiegel was in financial ruin due to immense debt. He found himself in debtor’s prison; however, after one month, he was released by a special act of the Colonial General Assembly. In 1775, after the glassworks closed, Stiegel left Manheim with nothing to his name. The rest of his life was spent dependent on odd jobs and the kindness of friends and relatives. Today, Stiegel glassware is highly valued and rare to find.

Today’s Manheim offers activities for the whole family. For fun there is the Outlaw Paintball Factory, which has an 80’ x 125’ indoor speedball field. There is also Laserdome, a place to play laser tag, see laser shows, and play in a state-of-the-art arcade. If you’re looking for outdoor fun, try Root’s Country Market and Auction on Tuesdays. It is the oldest single family-run country market in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. There are over 200 vendors, selling meats, produce, hand crafted items, sandwiches, funnel cakes, and other assorted goodies. Conestoga Auction is right across the street from Roots, if you’re looking for a good sale.
